How to Play Craps: A Beginner’s Guide

If you walk through any major casino, you will undoubtedly find a table that is much louder and more crowded than blackjack or roulette. The crowd is going wild while someone rolls the dice down the green felt. This chaotic scene is the game of Craps. To a complete beginner, the game seems terrifyingly complicated. There are confusing boxes and numbers, complex jargon being yelled by the dealers. Yet, this is completely false. While it looks complex, craps is actually one of the simplest, and most profitable games in Vegas. By understanding one rule, you can confidently roll the dice.

The Pass Line Bet: The Come-Out Roll

The only logical way to survive the craps table is to completely ignore 95% of the table. The confusing center sections are mathematically terrible “sucker bets” built to trick tourists. You only need to look at the long line that wraps around the entire edge of the table: the “Pass Line”. Placing a chip on the Pass Line is how you play the game. When a new round begins, the person rolling the dice (the “Shooter”) makes the Come-Out Roll. If you bet the Pass Line, you instantly win even money if the dice total 7 or 11. Your bet is taken away if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled. The math is that basic: 7/11 wins, 2/3/12 loses.

The Ongoing Game: The Goal of the Shooter

What if they roll a different number? If the dice land on one of the other numbers, that specific number officially becomes “The Point”. The dealer takes a white puck and moves it onto the corresponding box. The goal now changes. To win the money, the shooter keeps throwing until they roll the Point again. If they hit the Point, everybody with a Pass Line bet wins. Here is the danger: if a 7 is rolled prior to the Point, the round ends. You lose your bet, the game resets, and the dice are passed to the next player at the table. The entire excitement is just players cheering hoping the Point hits before the 7.

  • Taking Odds: Once a Point is established, you can back up your bet. This is called “Taking Odds,” and it is literally the only bet in the entire casino that has a house edge of exactly 0.00%. The casino makes zero profit on this bet.
  • The Villain Bet: You can bet that the table will lose. This is betting on the 7, or when the shooter sevens out. It is technically a smarter bet, but the other players will hate you because you are cheering for everyone else to lose.
  • Avoid the Center of the Table: All the bets in the middle of the table with the pictures of dice are terrible math traps with huge casino advantages. Never, ever place a chip in the center of the craps table.

Craps Basics Cheat Sheet: The Only Rules You Need

For a quick reference before you play, to make things easy, review the simple cheat sheet below. It summarizes the absolute core mechanics of the fundamental craps bet: the Pass Line.

The Dice Roll The Dice Result The Result
Come-Out Roll 7 or 11 Instant Win
Come-Out Roll Shooter rolls a 2, 3, or 12 (Crapping Out). You lose
Setting the Point The Point is set The number becomes the Point. The game moves to the next phase.
The Grind Shooter rolls the exact Point number again BEFORE rolling a 7. You WIN your Pass Line bet (and any Odds bets). Round resets.
Trying to Hit the Point Rolls a 7 (Seven Out) Total Loss

Ultimately, craps is actually incredibly simple. The casino purposefully designs the table layout to look incredibly complex and confusing so casual gamblers will make bad bets. By simply walking up, betting only on the Pass Line, avoiding the middle of the table, and ignoring the proposition bets, you are playing one of the smartest, most mathematically sound game available. Roll the dice, and experience the greatest time on the floor.
