How to Spot a Cheater at the Poker Table

Poker is utterly unique among casino games because you are not playing against the house; you are playing against the other players sitting at the table.

Unfortunately, some players decide to cross the line from aggressive strategy into illegal or highly unethical behavior to secure an advantage.

If you are playing live poker in a casino, and especially in an unregulated underground home game, you must be your own first line of defense.

Collusion: The Invisible Team Sport

The absolute most pervasive and difficult-to-prove form of cheating in modern poker is called “Collusion.”

For example, stacking chips in a specific pattern, placing a drink on the left side of the cup holder, or scratching their nose can secretly broadcast “I hold an Ace.”

If Player A bets, the Honest Player calls, and Player B (the colluder) raises massively, the Honest Player is caught in a psychological vice.

If they constantly check down the river against each other but play hyper-aggressively against everyone else, they are almost certainly a team.

Quietly stand up, find the Floor Manager, and express your concerns privately. The casino will monitor the cameras and handle the situation.

The Classic Cheat: Marking the Deck

While collusion is psychological, marking cards is a direct, physical assault on the integrity of the casino’s equipment.

Historically, cheaters used invisible ink and special sunglasses, but modern methods are much more tactile and difficult to catch.

However, in unmonitored home games, marked cards remain an extremely prevalent and dangerous threat.

To protect yourself, watch how the other players handle their cards. If a player is constantly bending, aggressively squeezing, or digging their nails into the cards, be highly suspicious.

Never play with a deck that looks worn, asymmetrical, or physically damaged.

Angle Shooting: The Unethical Grey Area

They are not stealing from the pot or marking cards, but they are absolutely violating the spirit of fair play to gain an unfair advantage.

A classic angle shoot is the “pump fake” bet. A player grabs a massive stack of chips and aggressively thrusts their arm forward as if to bet, but stops just short of the betting line.

If the opponent flips their winning hand over, the angle shooter will claim, “I never said call, I said fold!” and try to pull their chips back.

While the casino might not ban an angle shooter on the first offense, the dealer and the floor manager will issue strict warnings.

If an angle shooter tries to trick you, simply point them out to the dealer and refuse to engage in their psychological games.

The Poker Cheat Checklist

• The Whipsaw Trap: Beware of being caught between two aggressive raisers who are inflating the pot to steal your chips.
• Deck Management: Demand a fresh setup (new decks) immediately if the cards feel asymmetrical or physically altered.
• Hiding the Big Chips: Stacking $100 chips behind walls of $5 chips to deceive you about the actual size of their bankroll.
• The Dealer Cheat (Mechanic): An incredibly rare threat in modern casinos, but common in underground games. The dealer uses sleight of hand to deal cards from the bottom of the deck.

How to Handle an Unfair Game
